THE OWEN SHAW AWARD 2008
Funds of up to £3,000 are available for a study related to the rehabilitation of amputees. This is an annual award which has been made possible by the kind donations of the late Mr Owen Shaw, who was himself an amputee.
The aim of the study should be to devise better methods of helping patients to early mobilisation. Applications are invited from all those with an interest in this area, i.e. vascular surgeons, physicians, nurses, technologists, occupational therapists and prosthetists.
In the first instance applicants should submit an outline proposal, forms for which are available on request from:

Circulation Foundation Grants Programme 2008

- Circulation Foundation Clinical Research Fellowship - £15,000
- The Mary Davies Research Fellowship - £12,500
- Two travel grants of £5,000
- Two £5,000 grants to the SVN and SVT

- Circulation Foundation Clinical Research Fellowship – One grant worth £15,000 available
This grant of £15,000 is to support research in any area of arterial or venous disease either in basic science or in clinical medicine or surgery. The grant can be used to purchase small pieces of equipment, go towards salary costs or fund the running costs of a project.
Applicants should set out their proposals on a maximum of one A4 sheet. They should also state if this is an ongoing or new project. Successful applicants will be asked on completion of the project to say a few words about the project at the AGM of The Vascular Society and provide a photograph and information on the project for publication in the Circulation Foundation’s yearly newsletter and on the Foundations’ website. A brief CV on a separate sheet of paper should accompany the application.
- The Mary Davies Research award - Grant worth up to £25,000 available
The grant is given to support research activity, in either clinical or basic science research in any area of arterial vascular disease. The grant is not meant to fund a medical salary. It can be used to supplement an ongoing project and to buy a small piece of equipment or partially support a research nurse.
Applicants should set out their proposals on a maximum of one A4 sheet. They should also state if this is an ongoing or new project. Successful applicants will be asked on completion of the project to say a few words about the project at the AGM of The Vascular Society and provide a photograph and information on the project for publication in the Circulation Foundation’s yearly newsletter and on the Foundations’ website. A brief CV on a separate sheet of paper should accompany the application.
- Grants for training in endovascular procedures – Two grants of £5000 available
Two grants of £5000 are available to assist surgeons to obtain endovascular training they cannot otherwise obtain. The money could be used for travel or living costs or to pay institutional fees. The grants are available to trainees or established consultants.
Applications should be on a single A4 sheet of paper and should set out where the applicant intends to go for their training, a brief statement of their endovascular abilities and a statement from the centre they intend to visit confirming that they are prepared to receive them. On completion of the period of research the CF will expect a brief written report on the experience.
- Grants for use by SVN and SVT members – Two grants of £5000 available, one for the SVN and one for the SVT
These grants are intended either to fund research projects or travel to another centre for educational or research reasons. They should not normally be used to buy equipment.
Applications for these awards should be from SVN or SVT members and confined to a single sheet of A4. Applicants should describe the project or what they intend to do with the money. A brief CV should accompany the application on a separate sheet of paper. On completion of the period of research the CF will expect a brief written report on the experience.
